Buddha was the first religious teacher who gave women equal opportunities in the field of spiritual development. There are stories of women who have attained enlightenment. Visakha, Patacara, Kisagotami and Khema are some of the prominent women leaders in Buddhism.
The Bhikkuni Sangha (the Order of Nuns) was created then.
